Twisted Metal 4 does only that - it's vehicle combat for fans - not really anyone else. It's a fun as a party game - but simply shelved after a couple of hours. The game only narrowly beats out the entertainment value of competitors such as the Vigilante series. Honestly, I'd give it a miss if you're looking for a vehicle game that will deliver the ultimate thrill. The good news: went back to the drawing boards and has given us a better game than the previous offering that was Twisted Metal III.

The game engine plays and feels very much like the first two offerings from Singletrac. Gone are the constant and annoying flip-overs from III although the programmers over compensated for this a bit by having the cars flip back a little too quickly. The arena designs are better this time around as well. They have a lot of variety, are interesting for the most part and are full of secrets. Finally, the new remote weapons are a nice addition to the arsenal.

Everything seems to indicate that this is the best Twisted Metal yet, but unfortunately, that is not the case. So what's the bad news? The game speed varies from extremely fast almost too fast in the one-player game and smooth to choppy and slow. Once in a while, you can get your car stuck against a wall, and it won't become unstuck until you get smacked by an opponent. Also, some of the levels are way too big, leading to prolonged periods of inactivity while you're trying to locate some machine gun fodder.

By figuring these out, gamers will last longer in a level or prolong the agony of their opponents as they freeze them then wait for them to thaw before they load a few missiles up their exhaust. Another special move enables a gamer to jump from a stationary or moving position. This way, hidden areas are no longer unreachable.

Keep an eye open for backgrounds that are destructible. By blowing up a wall here or a monument there, power-ups become reachable. For instance, in Paris, by planting a bomb under the Eiffel Tower-when it blows up the Tower falls over-and creates a road leading to a power-up or two. There are also teleporters in areas that lead to power-ups.

Keep an eye out for these scattered throughout the levels. This time the characters have more personality and more of a background. The evil Calypso is behind the sadistic Twisted Metal tournament.
